In 2023, the FDA and USDA jointly approved the sale of cultivated
chicken — meat grown from animal cells in bioreactor facilities,
without slaughter — for human consumption in the United States.
UPSIDE Foods and GOOD Meat became the first companies authorized to
sell lab-grown animal protein commercially.
The coverage was celebratory in most outlets. The framing was sustainability,
innovation, animal welfare. The Silicon Valley investment thesis — that this
technology can eventually scale to replace conventional animal agriculture —
was presented as the story.
